David Johnson and Louise Engel live where they farm. They work hard to ensure that during their stewardship, a healthy and robust environment is maintained on the land.
It is from their very small but special piece of the Twenty Mile Bench sub-appellation of the Niagara Escarpment, that Featherstone creates "vin de terroir", wine that embodies and shares a sense of the life and the place where it has been produced.
At Featherstone we grow our wines in harmony with the land and the life that teems throughout it. We believe that this encourages an environment that is completely unique and that this individuality translates into our wines.
We hope you agree.
White Wine
2010 Gewürztraminer VQA
"The G Wine" | $19.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
(gah-VERTZ-trah-mee-ner) This wine has everything going for it- intense perfumed rosewater aromas, a little spice (licorice and lavender) and zesty, grapefruit freshness. Because it is dry, it pairs well with a variety of foods and is best enjoyed with Asian dishes, vegetarian entreés or roast chicken. Great also as an aperitif, chill lightly and take to parties.
"This is an attractive gewürztraminer made in a lighter style. The texture is fresh and crisp, while the flavours bring together brightness and complexity. It’s harmonious and drinks well on its own or with roast chicken or grilled seafood." - Wine Pointer (Rod Phillips)

2010 Off-Dry Riesling blend
"Four Feathers " VQA | $13.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
This is an easy and approachable blend of Riesling and other carefully chosen estate grown aromatic white wines (If we told you the blend, we would have to leave you chained in the wine cellar for the rest of your natural life.). Tropical lemon-lime, peach and spicy granny-smith apple flavours abound here. Delightful as an aperitif but see what it can do for a BBQ'ed chicken breast. ![]()
2010 Sauvignon Blanc VQA | $19.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
This wine has lots of tropical fruit flavours (lemon, lime and kiwi) with the typical straw and grassy nose. Zesty, refreshing and incredibly drinkable. It's a summer's day in a glass, full of vitality and spirit. Enjoy slightly chilled with a patio lunch, as pre-dinner sipping or with seafood appetizers.
""This is one beautiful sauvignon, one of the best from Ontario I’ve tasted in years. The fruit is gorgeous -- full on with plenty of complexity and structure—and it’s harnessed to a broad seam of crisp, clean acidity. All the components hold together well, and this is a great choice for oysters, seafood, and mild-medium curries."
- Wine Pointer (Rod Phillips)
2009 Canadian Oak Chardonnay | $21.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
This is our ‘feral’ Chardonnay - fermented by wild, local indigenous yeast instead of being inoculated with a commercial strain of yeast. The grapes were hand-picked and sorted and then fermentation took place in oak barrels that are made from oak trees that grew along the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario. The result is a rich and buttery wine that is truly ‘local’ in every sense of the word and represents the best of the region and the vintage. ![]()
"You have to admire the winemaker who fashioned this gem – Bravo! Hand picked, hand sorted and fermented with wild yeasts, this opens with a gorgeous nose of vanilla, spice and bergamot. It’s medium bodied, nicely textured with a silky smooth mouth feel.
Flavours of caramel, apple pie and kitchen spice wash through the crisp and refreshing
citrus-laced finish."
- Wine Current (Vic Harradine)
2010 Black Sheep Riesling VQA | $16.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
This wine is named after the sheep that helped to make it. The sheep were used in the vineyard to eat away the grape leaves that shaded the Riesling grape clusters. Removing these leaves exposes the grapes to sunlight, enhancing their ripeness and quality. The result is an exceptional wine that is crisp and refreshing with a ripe, Granny Smith apple and peach character. It is delicious accompaniment for chicken, seafood and pasta dishes with a little cream sauce as well as medium cheeses. ![]()
"Classy candied lime and lemongrass aromas spill into slightly sweet lemon drop and lime. Great sweet/sour balance. Food suggestion: fish sticks or crab cakes. Rating: 90" - Toronto Star (Gord Stimmell)
"Consider multiple bottles- you won’t regret it!!! It’s lively, fresh in the mouth and has impeccable fruit flavours that lean to peach, green pear, lime zest, kumquats." - The Hamilton Spectator (Dan Kislenko)
"This is a stunning Riesling, full of flavour, focused and complex. The fruit is harnessed to a broad line of bight, lively acidity, and the integration is seamless." - Winepointer/ Vines Magazine (Rod Philips)
"Lovely aromas of stone fruit, tangerine and lemon curd delight. Sweetly fruity, the flavours are peach, pear and sweet apple, with an underlying backbone of fresh acidity for balance....Displaying great potential of the vintage, it’s a flavourful and well-balanced Riesling with a lingering compelling finish. - Wine Current (Susan Desjardins)
"So beautiful! This riesling has it all: juicy, peach and lime aromas, balance, complexity, length and lambs. (That was a baaaaah-d joke, I know.) Medium-bodied and packed with flavour. These folks are Riesling Masters: Ka-pow! Score: 92/100" - Nat Decants (Natalie MacLean)

Sparkling
2008 Cuvée Joy | $34.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
2008 Cuvée Joy is a true, classic méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine in the style of the best Champagne houses of France. This bubbly is a 'blanc de blancs' (white from whites), made only from Chardonnay grapes. The wine slowly went through many steps, including the secondary fermentation in bottles that dissolves naturally produced carbon dioxide into the wine for the fizz. Following the tradition of the great sparkling wine houses of Europe, our wine is named after a woman at the heart of the family -- the winemaker’s mother, Joyce. ![]()
Tasting note : The wine opens with a fresh bouquet of citrus and green apple notes. A fine, persistent mousse expresses the fruit, along with minerality, great finesse, and a long finish. This sparkler pairs well with seafood, and especially oysters. | $34.95/750mL bottle, only 103 cases produced.

2008 Pinot Noir VQA | $29.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
Earthy, sour cherry and raspberry notes and a graceful sensuality best describe this wine. Deserving of fresh salmon or roast pheasant and a bit of formality- but be sure that you echo the delicate heart of the wine. Cellaring well and drinking at its peak 2011-2015. ![]()
"Look for persistence and complexity in this well-made pinot noir. It’s distinctly cool climate in style, with restrained, well-structured fruit, nicely calibrated acidity, and drying, easy-going tannins. Drink it with grilled salmon or with roast or grilled chicken or turkey." - Wine Pointer (Rod Phillips)
"Savory and pomegranate aromas mingling with subtle toasty aromas presage a stunning juicy mouthful of ripe red currant and cranberry underpinned by a ripe tannin structure. It finishes dry and racy with good mouth-watering acidity. Lovely sipped on its own, it’s brilliant with food, especially smoked duck breasts or slow-roasted pork." - Wine Current (Vic Harradine)
2009 Red Tail Merlot | $19.95
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
This is our first bottling of the Red Tail Merlot, and we ask ourselves ... why have a Yellow Tail, when you could have a Red Tail instead? Aged in French oak, this wine is liquid velvet in a glass: seductively flavoured, textured and generous. This is a wine for food. It matches grilled or roasted meats at table, or strong cheeses after dinner when you want to put your feet up.
”This is a very nicely pitched merlot. The fruit is just ripe with well extracted sweet. flavours and good complexity. The texture is quite lovely,. silky smooth and palate caressing. The tannins are present and. accounted for, but standing easy. Dry and just medium bodied,. this is a versatile wine that will go well with tomato based. pasta as with roast chicken, turkey or red meats. LCBO #131540, Release date, August 7, 2010.” - Rod Philips, ‘On Wine,’ May 10, 2010

Verjus
Featherstone 12 Brix Verjus
Non-alcoholic | $13.00 (750 ml)
Grown, Produced and Bottled by Featherstone
Verjus is made from Cabernet Franc grapes removed from our vines in midsummer, at a point in the growing cycle called véraison. Thinning the grape crop is an important part of managing our vineyards and producing high-quality wines because it concentrates energy and flavour in the remaining grapes.
The number of grapes thinned by hand depends on the season and usually the culled fruit are left on the ground as compost. However, if harvested and pressed into Verjus, they make a non-alcoholic, highly acidic juice with a tart apple-like flavour.
You can use Verjus as you would lemon juice or vinegar in any recipe, but while vinegar may clash with the wine you are serving, Verjus compliments wine. ![]()
