Folks who have the family name 'Featherstone' are often disappointed to find out that David Johnson and Louise Engel, the founders and owners of Featherstone Winery, are not part of the worldwide Featherstone clan.
The name Featherstone is a contrived one for Dave and Louise and is derived from their personal history but is not their family name. For years the couple owned and operated a gourmet food shop in Guelph, Ontario, that specialized in poultry. They were purveyors of everything from quail to turkeys. If it had feathers, they sold it.
'Stone' is a reference to
the geography of their vineyard in Niagara, which backs into the Niagara Escarpment. There is a stone rock face on the west side of the farm and behind that there is a rock quarry.
Feathers and stones sums up their history nicely -- although perhaps disappointing to all those Featherstone families who would love to have a long-lost relative with a winery in scenic Niagara.
