Red Tail Release: A return to the wild

Our 2008 Red Tail Merlot is named in honour of the local Red-tailed Hawks that we see soaring over the vineyards of Niagara. Falconer and winery owner Louise Engel was inspired by these magnificent birds to create a wine with the same soaring elegance and character.

Red-tailed Hawk

Carol Ricciuto is a local, licensed wildlife rehabilitator who works extensively with Red-tailed Hawks at the Open Sky Raptor Foundation in Grimsby, Ontario. From 1:00pm-3:00 pm on April 3 -- the day we release our Red Tail Merlot -- she will have a live Red-tailed Hawk with her at the winery. This is a rare opportunity to observe one of these magnificent creatures up close, ask questions and learn about these regal birds of prey.

A portion of the day's sales of the Featherstone Estate 2008 Red Tail Merlot will go to support the Open Sky Raptor Foundation. Saturday, April 3, 2010, 1:00-3:00pm

The ‘F’ing’ Winery Tour

The ‘F’ing’ Winery Tour Join us for a spring fling at all three of the ‘f’-ing wineries-Flat Rock Cellars, Fielding Estate, and Featherstone Estate Winery. We three wineries band together once a year for a fanciful, flavourful, “F’ing” Winery Tour.

Our farfetched theme and this year’s forthcoming festivities include fanciful food and wine pairings at each winery. This year the food pairings will focus on flatbread with a fresh, fabulous topping. Each winery will match their featured food to their feature wines. We hope to see you at the forthcoming frenzy of first-class wines. Bring your friends!

Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, from 11:00am-4:00pm
A passport fee of $10.00 per person and entitles you to taste two featured wines and to enjoy a fitting food pairing at each winery. Passports can be purchased at all three wineries, either by ordering ahead or on the day of your visit.

Lunch on the Veranda opens for the season

Veranda table setting at Featherstone Estate Winery

Our huge wrap-around veranda opens for the season this weekend. Our savory noshing menu returns with such popular items as our Mushroom Medley in Asiago Cream on Crostini; homemade chilled soups; and Mediterranean Antipasto plate. And of course, the clay-pot breads will be back.

Enjoy any of our wonderful wines by the glass or bottle with your lunch. See the full veranda menu here.

Lunch will be available on Fridays, Saturday, Sundays, and Mondays, from 11:00am-4:00pm: lunch beginning on May 21 to end of day on September 6, 2010.

June 26 & 27

Rieslings remembered

This summer we are dusting the cobwebs off of some of our older wines and pulling them out of the cellar. We will serve a flight of three Riesling wines, paired with tasty little food bites.

The wines and paired food will be offered on our veranda in addition to our regular menu. This is an opportunity to see how the flavour of Riesling wine changes over the years, and to compare older and younger versions. The wines will be served with fresh bread, cheese and light ‘noshing’ fare to match.

Three wines (2 oz of each) and food pairing: $16.95 (plus taxes) Saturday, June 26, and Sunday, June 27, from 11:00am to 4:00pm

Wine you 'wood' enjoy

To oak, or not to oak?

This weekend, older vintage Chardonnay emerges from the cellar. These wines will be served in a flight of three different vintage years, paired with tasty little food bites. (The wines and food parings will be offered on our veranda in addition to our regular menu.)

This is a special opportunity to compare Chardonnay that has been in an oak barrel (“wooded”) with unoaked (no “wood”) Chardonnay, and to see how the wines have changed with time.

The wines will be served with fresh bread, cheese and light ‘noshing’ fare matched to the wines.

Three wines (2 oz of each) and food pairing: $18.95 (plus taxes) Saturday, July 10, and Sunday, July 11, from 11:00am- 4:00pm

Seminar: Riesling
Wine made with 'sheep' labour

Today we celebrate with our Featherstone Estate 2009 Black Sheep Riesling, and the arrival of our woolly workers for 2010. Winemaker David Johnson will be on our huge wrap-around veranda for an alfresco tasting of Featherstone Estate Rieslings from our wine library.

In company with David, you will sample several vintages of Riesling, and explore what makes Niagara Riesling unique in the world. The tasting will be followed by a vineyard tour and a chance to meet and greet the sheep who will do vineyard work with us for a six-week term.

Hors d’oeuvres matched to the wines will also be served. Please wear appropriate shoes to meet the sheep (high heels will be regretted).

Sunday, July 18, at 1:00pm. The seminar lasts about 1-1.5 hours | $20.00 per person, to a maximum 16 people per session. We recommend calling ahead with a credit card number to reserve: 905-562-1949

Sheep in the vineyard … they’re baaa-ck David Johnson has added ‘shepherd’ to his job description. Join him for a vineyard tour and an introduction to the Featherstone Estate sheep. The sheep are brought into the vineyard for a brief period to do leaf removal on the vines and provide weed control.

Sip on our famous Featherstone Estate 2009 Black Sheep Riesling and enjoy a vineyard tour that is unique in Canada.

Time: 1:30pm. Tour lasts about 45 minutes. Three wines will be tasted. Please wear appropriate footwear to meet the sheep (high heels will be regretted).

$10.00 per person, to a maximum 20 people per session. We recommend calling ahead with a credit card number to reserve: 905-562-1949

As harvest approaches and cooler weather is in the offing, we box up the cutlery, put away the tables and chairs and turn our thoughts from sunny lunches on the veranda to the ripening grapes, booking harvest crews, and making wine.

Lunch from 11:00am-4:00pm, Friday, September 3, through to Monday, September 6, inclusive. We then close the veranda for the season.

Last chance for lunch in wine country.

Heirloom tomatoes taste best!

With this, we have paired our Featherstone Estate 2008 Cabernet Franc for a mouth-watering experience.
